However, when Al and Ilene come over to watch the speech, they are then treated to the additional footage, which sparks a heated argument between Tim and Jill.

He Ain’t Heavy, He’s Just Irresponsible

Jill Taylor (Patricia Richardson) is furious at Tim Taylor (Tim Allen) when he puts a huge hole in the floor trying to install a central vacuum in the basement. Tim is spared from her wrath when his brother Marty (William O’Lelary) comes to visit — but when Tim learns that Marty is thinking of leaving his wife just six months after she gave birth to twins, he’s so upset at him that they have a terrible fight. In conversation with Wilson (Earl Hindman), Tim realizes that he’s always been like a brother and a father (or frother) to Marty, but what Marty really needs now is a brother and friend (brend) who will listen to him. The next time he sees Marty, Tim sits and listens to his troubles, and is able to give him helpful advice about marriage and childrearing.

When Tim and Jill receive a letter from Mark’s teacher saying that she wishes to speak to them, it turns out that she is concerned about Mark’s attentiveness in class. Unsure what could be the cause of this uncharacteristic problem, Tim and Jill take turns trying to coax an explanation out of Mark. Initially resistant to talk, it eventually comes to pass that Mark cannot read the blackboard at school and fears getting glasses will make him look like a dork.

Death Begins at Forty

Tim Taylor (Tim Allen) is about to turn 40, and is looking forward to celebrating with a massive steak and some vigorous lovemaking with Jill (Patricia Richardson). But when one of his friends at the hardware store suffers a heart attack, Tim becomes paranoid about his health and begins taking extreme precautions, such as eating vegetables and lean meats. When Wilson (Earl Hindman) reveals to Tim that he himself suffered a heart attack 15 years ago, and explains how the experience encouraged him to live life to the fullest, he decides to go back to his old ways. Meanwhile, on Tool Time, Tim and Al (Richard Karn) use a state-of-the-art shrink ray to become four inches tall and take a field trip inside the engine of a dysfunctional hot rod.

When Tim discovers that Jill has tried to conceal a scratch in the paint job on her 1955 Chevy Nomad with nail polish, he demands that he take it into the body shop to have it repaired. 

However, when he drives the Nomad to a location shoot of Tool Time, where they are demonstrating construction crane operation, Tim negligently takes over the crane operation and accidentally crushes the car by dropping a steel beam on it.

Meanwhile, the turf war in the boroughs Hamtramck middle school heats up with a new opponent in Vinne Magurn (sp?) who Brad and Randy must defeat in order to retain dominance in their territory.

It’s Halloween again, and as tradition would have it, the Taylors are hosting their annual costume party. Things are all spoofs and goofs until Tim receives a letter from an obsessed fan names Rose. Initially boastful of this, he then learns the dangers such a fan poses after Wilson suggests possible mental instability. This ignites Tim’s paranoia, as the messages from Rose increase in frequency and intent. With the claim that she’ll be at his party, Tim aptly freaks out.
