Tool Time has run a poll amongst its audience to vote on their favorite guest star: George Foreman, Mario and Michael Andretti, or Dwayne from K&B Construction. The result, to Tim’s surprise, was Bob Vila, who received 112 write-in votes. Making his second appearance on the show, Bob more or less challenges Tim to a lawnmower race for charity. Tim supes up his already suped up mower with a helicopter engine and enters the race… and when it inevitibly goes awry, the I-96 Highway.

At home, Brad and Randy force Mark to eat a tadpole, and Jill exacts her revenge on them by making them tadpole stew.

Birth of a Hot Rod

Tim is on the verge of finally starting the engine on the hot rod that he’s been building for over a year, but he’s spending so much time in the garage working on it that he’s ignoring all of the other household chores that Jill has asked him to do. When Tim procrastinates too long, Jill finally hires a repairman which infuriates Tim as it challenges his authority as “The Tool Man”. Wilson reminds Tim of one of his own quotes, “What every job has in common is that every job must be done and must be done well,” and Tim resolves to do better at fixing things around the house, and helps teach Jill some home improvement skills of her own.

Meanwhile, it’s Lawn Week on Tool Time where Tim and Al get into trouble when they accidentally behead a guest’s topiary flamingo.

To Build or Not to Build

Jill Taylor (Patricia Richardson) has a single Mother’s Day wish: That Tim (Tim Allen) and the boys get her an actual heartfelt gift this year, rather than something store-bought at the last minute. In response, Tim, Brad (Zachery Ty Bryan) and Mark (Taran Noah Smith) take over the garage and begin building Jill gifts out of wood. But when Randy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas) doesn’t want to build a gift, it takes some advice from Wilson (Earl Hindman) and Jill for Tim to learn that he should let his boy express his love in his own way.

Meanwhile, on the set of Tool Time, Tim and Al (Richard Karn) are joined by the K&B Construction guys to pay a very special tribute to mothers everywhere.

Ex Marks the Spot

When Tim Taylor (Tim Allen) runs into his ex-girlfriend Stacey (Kathleen Garrett) at a bar, their brief reunion unexpectedly leads to her dropping by the house to meet Jill (Patricia Richardson). When Tim’s ex meets the woman he left her for, it comes out that Tim’s breakup with Stacey was a little less than chivalrous.

Meanwhile, Al Borland (Richard Karn) finds himself kindling a romance of his own with the newly-single Stacey. But when his passion cools before hers does, it puts both him and Tim in an awkward position.

Much Ado About Nana

Jill (Patricia Richardson) is on edge because her mother Nana (Polly Holliday) is coming to visit and she wants everything to be perfect. When Jill finds out that Nana is giving her an old tea set while giving a treasured family heirloom to Jill’s sister, Jill is furious – but she forbids Tim (Tim Allen) from getting involved. Tim tries to keep the secret, but when Nana suggests that Jill’s anger and frostiness is related to a bedroom issue, Tim spills the beans. In response, Nana and Jill have a talk in the backyard in which Jill learns the true significance of the tea set Nana gave her.

Meanwhile, on Tool Time, Tim and Al (Richard Karn) build a deck.

Shooting Three to Make Tutu

When Jill (Patricia Richardson) begs Tim (Tim Allen) to take Mark (Taran Noah Smith) to the ballet, Tim reluctantly agrees — but when Wilson (Earl Hindman) offers him courtside tickets to a basketball game, Tim can’t say no. He and Mark go to the ballet for half an hour, then the game. When Jill finds out, she’s furious that Tim has sabotaged her attempt to introduce her son to the finer things in life. Wilson suggests to Tim that his disdain for ballet is rooted in ignorance, so to make amends with Jill he creates a video of a male-friendly ballet that splices dance with sports footage.

Meanwhile, Brad (Zachery Ty Bryan) and Randy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas) steal a cigar from Tim’s sock drawer and smoke it while he and Jill are gone. At first they’re able to hide their mischief – until Tim and Jill find the evidence and trick them into confessing.

Karate or Not, Here I Come

Tim Taylor (Tim Allen) enrolls his son Mark (Taran Noah Smith) in a karate class when Randy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas) and Brad (Zachary Ty Bryan) exclude him from their games. Jill’s (Patricia Richardson) doubts about the safety of karate are confirmed when an older kid in the class begins tormenting Mark – but soon both the Taylor parents find themselves getting into fights in class.

Meanwhile, on Tool Time, Tim utilizes camouflage and a little help from Lisa (Pamela Anderson) to pull a prank on Al (Richard Karn).

Brad Taylor (Zachery Ty Bryan) breaks up with Jenny Sudarsky (Jessica Wesson) because she won’t let him copy her math homework anymore – and his grades suffer as a result. Randy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas) suggests that Brad play it up like Jenny broke up with him so he can get sympathy from Jill (Patricia Richardson) and distract from his bad grades. But when Jill discovers the truth, she and Tim (Tim Allen) punish him by trying to teach him math.

Meanwhile, an annoying woodpecker has taken residence in the roof of the Taylor house, leading Tim to take crazier and crazier steps to try and scare it away.

You’re Driving Me Crazy, You’re Driving Me Nuts

While on their way to a wedding in the middle of a snowstorm, Tim Taylor (Tim Allen) gets lost and is unwilling to stop for directions, much to the consternation of Jill (Patricia Richardson). When he finally does, Tim realizes he’s driven to Ohio – and is now going in circles. When they finally make it back home, Wilson helps Tim understand that as a man he has a mild sense of direction that gives him enough confidence to think he’s going in the right direction, even when he isn’t.

On Tool Time, Tim and Al (Richard Karn) demonstrate a new build-it-yourself entertainment center – and Tim breaks the TV.
