Love Is a Many Splintered Thing

For her job at Inside Detroit Magazine, Jill has concocted a compatibility quiz for women to take to determine whether or not they have married the right man. Tim finds this an offense to the very idea of being a man, and sets out to create his own compatibility quiz. A minor rift erupts between the two of them as they search to find the glue that holds their marriage together.

Also, Randy has agreed to do the school talent show as a ventriloquist, but there’s a problem: he doesn’t know how to quist his ventrilo.

Howard’s EndSeason Two, Episode Fourteen

Howard's End (1993) | Home Improvement

Howard’s End

When Jill opens her own checking account for the money she’s made at her new job, Tim doesn’t take it well, and soon the two of them are locked in an argument over what in their life belongs to whom. When Tim lets slip that he believes Jill’s car, not to mention the whole house they live in, belongs to him simply because he paid for them, Jill is furious at him for marginalizing her and her role in their relationship. Wilson helps Tim understand that his belief that he owns everything in the house is actually rooted in a deep-seated desire to own Jill as well, and Tim makes amends by calculating how much money he owes Jill for twelve years of marriage and motherhood.

Meanwhile, Brad gets into hot water when he kills Jenny Sudarsky’s goldfish by putting its bowl too close to a lamp and making the water too hot. At first, he and Randy try to find a duplicate goldfish so she won’t find out, but ultimately Brad comes clean, and Jenny, against all odds, inexplicably isn’t mad about it.

Bell Bottom BluesSeason Two, Episode Thirteen

Bell Bottom Blues (1993) | Home Improvement

Bell Bottom Blues

Jill is a bit of a pack rat, and Tim is fed up with it. He can barely get his clothes out of the closet due to the sheer amount of items she’s accumulated over the years – a multitude of belts in varying shades of red, clothes that are too big and too small, and yes, even a festive fruit hat from her days cosplaying as Carmen Miranda. Tim gives her an ultimatum: clear out the closet, or he’s going to demolish and renovate. Certainly this would be inspiration enough for anyone to take action, but Jill drags her feet, and Tim’s MORE POWER wishes come true as he sets out to build the ultimate automated closet.

Meanwhile, Brad has just socked a kid in the kisser at school because he was making fun of him for being hugged by his dad. He’s been sent home with a note for his parents to sign saying they are aware of the situation, and if it happens again, he will be suspended. Brad is going through some ch-ch-changes, and needs to turn to face the strange.

I'm Scheming of a White Christmas (1992) | Home Improvement

I’m Scheming of a White Christmas

It’s Christmas, and all of the Taylors are getting into the holiday spirit. Tim has built has built an elaborate light display on his front lawn that blinds the entire neighborhood, while Brad and Randy are going door-to-door collecting money for charity. When Tim and Jill catch Brad and Randy trying to steal some of the charity money they’ve raised, they’re shocked that their kids could be so dishonest. But afterwards, the guilt-ridden boys not only return the stolen money, but dig up bags of their own possessions that they can donate to charity as well.

Meanwhile, on the set of Tool Time, Tim is forced to deal with Maureen’s micromanagement while trying to produce an episode with musical guests, inexplicably, the Manhattan Transfer.

Abandoned FamilySeason Two, Episode Eleven

Abandoned Family (1992) | Home Improvement

Abandoned Family

Jill returns home from work glowing because she has not only been given more responsibility at her job at the magazine, she’s been put on the assignment to do the cover! (What she actually does at this magazine is still unclear to me.) This means, though, that she will have less time for household responsibilities, and that Tim will have to pick up the slack.

In an effort to ensure everything runs smoothly, Jill leaves incredibly specific instructions – one might say micromanagey instructions, but I suppose that’s subjective depending on your tolerance and ability to absorb the intricacies of a task – for Tim to follow. Feeling constrained, untrusted, and hapless, Tim asserts that he’ll do things his own way.

And he does, to Jill’s chagrin. He amps up the dryer, which goes berserk, sets a gingerbread house on fire, and *gasp* instead of making the kids lunch, gives them lunch money. Jill decides it might be too much to work and fix Tim’s mistakes, but really, she just needs to get a prescription from Dr. Feelgood and take a chill pill.

Let’s Did LunchSeason Two, Episode Ten

Let's Did Lunch (1992) | Home Improvement

Let’s Did Lunch

For the last few weeks, Dave and Karen have been dating and getting fairly serious (as first seen in Heavy Meddle). But when they visit Tim and Jill, Dave takes Tim aside and asks him to say that they had lunch together the day before. Why? Because Dave doesn’t feel the same level of commitment as Karen, and has been seeing someone else on the side. This puts Tim in an awkward position over whether or not to tell Jill, and by proxy Karen, or to stay true to his friendship with Dave, and play along. Before long, Jill discovers Tim’s secret, and she turns cold toward Dave, who blames Tim for not keeping up the facade.

Meanwhile, on Tool Time, Al is challenged to a blindfolded wood sniffing contest, and the Taylor boys continue their turf war against some neighborhood kids.

Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way

Jill has been going over the personal paperwork, and realizes that her and Tim need to update their will. Tim, immediately concerned by the implications of literally signing his life away, gets in his head about it, and refuses to sign, or even discuss it.

Presently, Mark overhears Tim expressing his concerns to Wilson, and becomes scared that he’s going to lose his father. After a father-son heart-to-heart conversation, Tim finally agrees to sign the updated will.

Meanwhile, Al is building a cabin by hand and invites the Al Borland Fan Club to attend a screening of Tool Time.

May the Best Man Win (1992) | Home Improvement

May the Best Man Win

When Mr. Binford elopes with a model, he puts his busybody daughter Maureen (Vicki Lewis) in charge of “Tool Time” – much to the chagrin of Tim (Tim Allen), who has been running the show for years. Maureen’s meddlesome nature leads her to alter the plans for the house they’re renovating on the show and start making Al (Richard Karn) wear Hawaiian shirts, and there’s nothing Tim can do.

Jill (Patricia Richardson), meanwhile, has gotten a new job and couldn’t be more excited. With Jill, Wilson (Earl Hindman) and even the boys too busy to give him advice, Tim is at a loss – until he comes up with a plan to send Maureen out of town to get her out of their hair.

Roomie for ImprovementSeason Two, Episode Seven

Roomie For Improvement (1992) | Home Improvement

Roomie for Improvement

Uh oh! Mark has the chicken pox, and Tim has never had them, so Jill packs his bags and sends him off to stay with Al for a few days. Tim, however, finds this to be quite a chore, especially considering Al’s overzealousness for planned meals and activities. After one night of watching Al’s home movies, Tim is ready to move into a hotel, but is afraid that he’ll hurt Al’s feelings. This is ultimately moot because on Tool Time, Tim plays a game with guests Mario and Michael Andretti to guess the sounds of revving engines, and pranks Al by including a recording of his snoring. Al expresses his upsettiness to Tim back at home, leading to a brief row, to which Tim apologizes and helps mend by putting in a good word with Al’s neighbor who has a crush on him.
